Delivering an interactive workshop and kōrero on Māori play with the desire to retain, reclaim, and restore traditional practices, Nikki Penetito-Hemara shares a workshop that breathes life into the aspirations of Māori play. Nikki speaks of the opportunity to enhance te reo Māori and restore mātauranga that solidifies strong cultural identity, restores cultural practices, and connects with whakapapa that deepens levels of mātauranga through play. She also reminds us “Tā te tamariki tāna mahi wāwahi tahā. It is the job of the children to smash the calabash.” In order for these approaches to be authentically and uniquely activated we must open opportunities for tamariki to explore, break rules, imagine and try new things!
