He Pī Ka Rere

Teachers Wiki Burdon and Raiha Johnson joined us to deliver a workshop at the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2021. Together, they deliver He Pī Ka Rere in a kura auraki in Murihiku (Invercargill). Through their collective magic they provide opportunities for tamariki Māori to have uplifting experiences that validates their place in te ao Māori and reconnects them with whakapapa Māori, pūrākau, mātauranga as well as kori tinana. During this workshop Wiki and Raiha share stories of young kaitiaki and how they empower tuākana (year 5 and 6 students) in the He Pī Ka Rere kaupapa. They also demonstrate how this approach has helped grow thriving young leaders through sharing and activating this amazing kaupapa among whānau, younger students and teachers. “Māori success and Māori achievement is more than just academic data.” Kōrero captured and illustrated by the League of Live Illustrators.
