Tax on Sugary Drinks- Submission

Tax on Sugary Drinks- Submission

Recently, the NZ Beverage Guidance Panel (NZBGP), of which Toi Tangata Kaiwhakahaere Matua, CEO, is a member of, called for consultation on a policy brief they had developed highlighting the urgency for placing a tax on sugary drinks (SDs) in New Zealand. The document outlined the effects and cost to New Zealand healthcare from high SD intake, along with the projected benefits for placing a tax on sugary drinks. The brief included recommendations for key stakeholders and settings to work collaboratively together to reduce SD intake, how nationwide and worldwide support for a SD tax has grown, and where the revenue generated from the tax could be used to help address the burden of childhood obesity and dental decay in New Zealand. These goals aligned to the vision articulated by the advocacy group ‘FIZZ’ to achieve a Sugary Drink Free New Zealand by 2025.

With the input from our Facebook whanau, Toi Tangata answered this call and submitted a response to the NZBGP. To read this document, click here.

Nga mihi nui to everyone who contributed whakaaro to our online sugar tax poll and congratulations again to Leez Nepia who scored a Toi Tangata hoodie and drink bottle.
