20 Dec Dive Otago Collaboration Elevates Water Safety
We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Dive Otago for the upcoming Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2024. Led by Virginia Watson, the Dive Otago team has been dedicated to the commendable task of enhancing skills and imparting knowledge to whānau in and around wai, with a specific focus on snorkelling and free diving. These activities have been identified as areas where whānau often find themselves in perilous situations in the water.
In support of our upcoming collective mahi, members of the Toi Tangata team recently journeyed to Dunedin to take part in the advanced snorkelling course. The initial part of our session was devoted to covering theoretical aspects, safety protocols, essential gear, and prepping for water activities. This was then followed by a pool session where we learned crucial skills such as achieving neutral buoyancy, proper snorkel breathing, free diving techniques, adhering to the buddy system, using hand signals, releasing the weight belt, and refining swimming techniques.
The team thoroughly enjoyed this incredible experience, and we’re excited for those who will get an opportunity to experience that same at our Hui ā Tau!
