20 Dec Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau 2021
The Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau is a signature feature of the Māori nutrition and physical activity sector calendar. This year the Toi Tangata Hui ā Tau was held online as a virtual event 9 – 11 November 2021. Like many organisations, Toi Tangata made the move to switch their hui to an online platform to mitigate any issues raised by Covid 19.
With a stellar lineup of speakers including Dr Ihirangi Heke, Dr Wayne Ngata, Dr Di and Mark Kopua, and Jessica Hutchings, the theme “Kia Tū ko Taikākā” enabled us to explore innovative opportunities to influence and drive positive, strength-based mātauranga through an online platform.
Keynote and workshop speakers over the three days wove different threads of mātauranga Māori, from the importance of pūrākau through to the many aspects of kori, tākaro, meditation, whakapakari tinana, tamariki development and whanaungatanga in the digital world, māramataka māori and tools that support rangatahi wellbeing.
This included looking at moving from human centred to taiao centred as a process not an outcome that shifts health and wellbeing as an incidental outcome of understanding mātauranga māori, deepening capabilities, strengthening knowledge systems that is innate within our DNA.
Through these woven threads of kōrero delivered online, this also opened up the opportunity for Toi Tangata to extend its reach beyond the public health sector and serve a diverse range of participants from different backgrounds across Aotearoa. This is seen as an important insight for Toi Tangata, as our online event opens up opportunities and the ability to build critical mass across Aotearoa.
