He Pī Ka Rere draws on the imagery of a fledgling bird preparing for flight. When a bird is ready to fly it stretches out its wings, faces the wind and launches itself into the air – He Pī Ka Rere!
From this imagining stems the concept that when a child is ready to crawl, walk, or run, they do so just as a manu pīpī would do.
If you want to learn more about He Pī Ka Rere or how you can use it in your Kohanga Reo or Early Childhood Education Centre, email our Pouārahi | Training and Education Manager, Ranginui Rikirangi-Thomas for more information or to organise a wānanga in your rohe at ranginui@toitangata.co.nz
