You can often catch her and her whānau in Waiwhetu leading Uekaha Aotearoa, formerly known as Haka Fit.

Mason Ngawhika

BCapSC, BA Maori

Programme Design Specialist

Te Arawa, Ngai Tahu

Mason Ngawhika is a Māori nutritionist who has had a long association with the Public Health Sector. In recent years Mason has been implementing a positive health approach to his programmes. One strand of positive health is a movement away from a ‘one size fits all approach’.

Mason believes that a stratified approach to nutrition and physical activity is a superior strategy. A stratified approach recognises many kinds of healthy diets. People may respond to different types of food and different kinds of exercise. A strength based approach that acknowledges a person’s biology, preferences, abilities and cultures will produce the best outcomes.

Dr J Ihirangi Heke

Ph.D Sports and Exercise Psych, BA Maori Studies, PG Dip Ed, PG Cert ACE, M.ED (Psych)

Waikato, Tainui

Dr. Ihi Heke is a Māori Health and Physical Activity consultant involved in a number of projects including National health and physical activity initiatives funded by the Ministry of Health and Education.

Recently, Dr Heke was also funded by Johns Hopkins Medical University to develop global indigenous health models based on Maori concepts of indigeneity.

Dr Heke believes it is time we reassessed Māori nutrition, physical activity, and outdoor education processes to include a much higher level of Maori views of the environment and environmental deities and how they contributed to perpetuating ancestral knowledge.

A continued focus on non-Māori engagement with health, physical activity and outdoor education has not and will not be enough to recognise the huge range of Māori information connected to the environment.

Dr Heke has produced a framework that provides an alternative to the current non-Māori system that utilises a strength-based, culturally appropriate system of Atuatanga (environmentally based information), Kaitiakitanga (indigenous role models) and Tipuna (esoteric knowledge) known as the Atua Matua Māori health framework.
