Call for Papers: 2018 Special Issue- Mātauranga Māori shaping marine and freshwater futures.

New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research is calling for papers for a 2018 Special Issue entitled Mātauranga Māori shaping marine and freshwater futures.

Māori have distinct cultural knowledge, values, and perspectives that establish their identity, responsibilities, and rights to manage and use aquatic resources. There is an enormous potential for the use of mātauranga Māori to enhance our understanding of aquatic ecosystems, underpin culturally appropriate restoration approaches, and provide a more holistic and integrated perspective for research, monitoring, planning, and policy and resource development. A number of key drivers over the past 10-15 years have influenced Māori participation in freshwater and marine research, planning, policy and management; including Treaty Settlements, Vision Mātauranga Policy, Resource Management Act and the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management.

The anticipated date of publication is December 2018 and the anticipated manuscript submission deadline is 31 January 2018. The guest editorial team includes Joanne Clapcott, Erica Williams, Daniel Hikuroa, Chris Hepburn and Jamie Ataria. Please send a preliminary title, list of authors and a short descriptive paragraph outlining the scope of your proposed manuscript by Monday 31 July 2017 to the chief guest editor, Joanne Clapcott (joanne.clapcott@cawthron.org.nz).

The guest editors will make a decision on which manuscripts to invite for the Special Issue and let authors know by 31 August 2017. Note that an invitation to submit does not guarantee acceptance for publication; this will depend on the outcome of normal peer review process and authors meeting critical time schedules.

Please direct any queries to Joanne Clapcott or to Candida Savage (candida.savage@otago.ac.nz), Senior Editor of NZJMFR.
